Luke Cates

Mary W. Cates’ Thoroughbred Hunter “Smooth Moovs” went over the Rainbow Bridge on February 10, 2018 at Twisted Oak Farm in Bulverde, TX. He was 28. “Luke,” as he was called in the barn resided at TOF for 22 years. He was purchased in Virginia as a green 6 year old in 1996. As he became experienced in the show ring he won many championships with his owner Mary, and trainers Claudia and Johnny Conn. In 1998 he was 1st yr. green hunter champion/ TX, 1999 2nd yr. green hunter champion/ TX, 2000 Regular Working Hunter Champion/ TX with Claudia. Although Luke was only 15.3, he never knew he was little. He was the epitome of a show horse, a horse of a lifetime, according to Claudia. His only quirk was getting his bridle on. His ears were sensitive due to Aureal plaques, and one of our grooms, Paulino, figured out how to take the bridle apart and put it on without touching his ears. Luke was enjoyed by many and his happy face will be greatly missed.
