Baby Thor, as we called him, was our gentle giant. The day we brought him home nine years ago, was the day we totally understood unconditional love. Thor was a beautiful, regal Great Dane. Thor weighed about 170 lbs and looked very intimidating….but, he was quite the opposite. Thor was a loving, gentle giant. His patience and understanding with young children was amazing. Even at the end when I knew he was hurting we had gone to the vet. On our way home we stopped at a friends house and she has a home daycare. We were outside with the kids and when I looked up there was Thor….patiently sitting in the middle of the yard with five little kids running all around him, they were laying on him and just loving him. I knew he wasn’t feeling well, but there he sat….giving gentle kisses to the gentle hugs he received. Thor was also known to go to nursing homes to visit the residents. He knew which rooms to go into. Oh the smiles he brought to those faces. Just a slobbery kiss made their day.

As for at home with us….he thought he was a lap dog! He let us share OUR bed. And he would stretch out as far as he could. He would stick his tongue out if he knew he could take up more room! He thought this was amusing! And so did we. With all the slobbering, passing gas, tracking mud in the house and playing with his two best friends, Ozzie and Maw, and all the things he destroyed it was worth it. Thor was one of a kind for sure.

Thor was diagnosed with cancer in December 2010. There was nothing they could do. So, they gave us medications and told us to enjoy the time we had left with him. Well, how much time was that? The doctor didn’t know. Well? How do we know it will be time? The doctor said we would know. Knowing that day was comming still didn’t prepare us for it. My husband and I sitting on the floor with him while the vet helped him to go to doggy heaven was the hardest thing we had to do. We did it. We held him in our arms until he took his last breath….then held him some more.

I am so glad we chose to have him cremated. The box that he was sent back to us is beautiful! Thor now has his special spot on the fireplace mantel. Thor will never leave our hearts nor will he ever be forgotten. We love you Thor! Love, Mom, Dad, Grandma, Hayden,

Love Mom and Dad
